{"id":122,"date":"2015-08-02T15:08:24","date_gmt":"2015-08-02T20:08:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/landofhavilahfarm.com\/loh\/?page_id=122"},"modified":"2016-02-24T17:21:43","modified_gmt":"2016-02-24T22:21:43","slug":"homemade-milk-machine","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/landofhavilahfarm.com\/loh\/natural-raising\/other-helpful-information\/homemade-milk-machine\/","title":{"rendered":"Homemade Milk Machine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\"><strong>February 24, 2016:<\/strong> \u00a0I originally created this page because I couldn&#8217;t find anyone who made anything like my homemade milk machine, and I wanted to help others with an economical option instead of a milk machine that is $1000+. \u00a0Now <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplepulse.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Simple PULSE<\/a><\/em><\/strong> is available, and it is very similar in concept to what I have here &#8211; <em>but they have experience and would be able to provide you with customer support<\/em>. \u00a0I would strongly encourage you to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplepulse.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">contact them<\/a><\/em> to purchase a ready-to-go system instead of trying to make this one, especially if you are not mechanically inclined.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\">_________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype'; font-size: large;\"><strong>(Originally written in 2007)<\/strong> I have a homemade milk machine that I bought from a friend of mine.\u00a0 She built it with the help of a man on a Yahoo Group.\u00a0 Unfortunately, she doesn&#8217;t have his contact information anymore.\u00a0 I have searched and searched for\u00a0this man, hoping that I could link to a website if he builds and sells these milk machines, but I have not had any success locating him.\u00a0 Here are some pics and info to help you build one, if you desire.\u00a0 Hopefully, he will eventually find this page and I can give you a link to buy a pre-made milk machine directly from him. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u00a0[In 2014, I upgraded to the CoPulsation System (discussed below). \u00a0I included information about the\u00a0the upgrade (in italics) below.]\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">Vacuum pump.<\/span><\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>[I upgraded to an OLD Surge Vacuum Pump that I bought used from a friend &#8211; thanks Jen!]<\/em><\/span> \u00a0I have a Robinair VacuMaster 2 stage vacuum pump.\u00a0 Model #15500.\u00a0 Capacity: 5 CFM.\u00a0 Volts: 110 v &#8211; 60 hz.\u00a0 Motor: 1\/3 hp.\u00a0 It is my understanding that this is a vacuum pump that mechanics use to work on the A\/C systems on vehicles.\u00a0 It is intended for high vacuum, so it will &#8220;smoke&#8221; and has actually spit\u00a0a bit of oil out the exhaust\u00a0while running when it has air going through it like a milk machine hooked to it will allow.\u00a0 I attached\u00a0a piece of old garden hose to it and routed it out the door, it hasn&#8217;t bothered me since.\u00a0 This\u00a0does not seem to hurt the pump\u00a0at all &#8211; it\u00a0is running like it always did.\u00a0 Here is\u00a0a pump\u00a0that is very similar to mine, I just couldn&#8217;t see the hp listed anywhere:\u00a0 <span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Robinair-15300-VacuMaster-Vacuum-Pump\/dp\/B000O1E5UQ\">Robinair 15300 VacuMaster 3 CFM Vacuum Pump<\/a>\u00a0 This link goes to a pump that was for sale on Amazon at $161 (free tax &amp; shipping).\u00a0 If the link no longer works, just do a search for that model, I found lots of them.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">Pulsator.<\/span><\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.copulsation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CoPulsation<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0 THIS is on my wish list.\u00a0 I plan to change to this system\u00a0at some point\u00a0i.e. upgrading my current machine, as you CAN get bits and pieces to add to this homemade milk machine, at least it appears to me that it would work with my milk machine.\u00a0 You DO NOT have to buy their entire milking system, the man here told me that you can upgrade your current machine. I checked with Bill at CoPulsation yesterday (May 3rd, 2011), I asked him if he would take a look at this webpage and let me know if his products could definitely be used to upgrade my milking machine. He said: <em>&#8220;Yes, our product will easily work with your existing set up. You would simply remove your existing pulsator and turn in our pulsator. You have a nice setup put together from what I see. It is similar to one another customer of mine did a few months ago. I noted your vacuum pump. It is very similar to one I use for trade shows for my demo unit. It is designed to evaluate refrigeration systems. I have found that mine tends to push a little oil up out the breather. font-size: large;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landofhavilahfarm.com\/user\/cimage\/Goat-Claw-Assembly---web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong><u>Hoses.<\/u><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u00a0 You will need Milk Hose and Vacuum Hose.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong>Milk Hose.<\/strong>\u00a0 The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.partsdeptonline.com\/cgi-bin\/store\/commerce.cgi?product=125&amp;cart_id=442894.276&amp;exact_match=on\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\">Milk Hose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"> is special and is made to have raw milk travel through it, it is food grade.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t just use any kind of hose for this.\u00a0 You will need enough to attach the PVC milk machine to the vacuum pump, another length to go from the\u00a0PVC mlk machine to the milk bucket, and the last length that will go from the Goat Claw Assembly to the\u00a0milk bucket (this is the only length of hose that actually has milk flowing through it.)\u00a0\u00a0You will probably\u00a0need the 1\/2&#8243; diameter.\u00a0 Make sure you check the information on the Vacuum Pump you are buying though, mine has a 1\/2&#8243;\u00a0&#8220;valve&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong>Vacuum Hose.\u00a0 <\/strong>The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.partsdeptonline.com\/cgi-bin\/store\/commerce.cgi?product=125&amp;cart_id=442894.276&amp;exact_match=on\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\">vacuum hose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"> has only the\u00a0&#8220;vacuum&#8221; going through it.\u00a0 It goes from your pulsator to your Milking Claw.\u00a0 I use the &#8220;pair&#8221; type &#8211; 2 hoses attached together instead of 2 separate hoses. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>[My CoPulsation System came with new vacuum hose that is different than what I have pictured on this page.]<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">Milk Bucket.<\/span><\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>[When I upgraded to the CoPulsation System, I bought a new milk bucket and lid so I no longer use what I have pictured here. \u00a0It was a nice stepping stone, so I&#8217;m leaving the pictures here for anyone interested.]<\/em><\/span> \u00a0This part I&#8217;m pretty proud of, I made this myself\u00a0modifying my friend&#8217;s idea of welding pieces of pipe on top a metal lid to the gallon jar.\u00a0 I thought I&#8217;d like it better if I went to a plumbing store and found food grade parts to fit together above and below the gallon jar lid.\u00a0 I opted for a plastic, food grade lid on my gallon sized glass jars.\u00a0 I could easily do this myself, which is a necessity for me.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 Sorry the pics of the lid are fuzzy.\u00a0\u00a0My camera didn&#8217;t like focusing on the correct thing&#8230;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landofhavilahfarm.com\/user\/cimage\/top-of-milk-bucket-lid---web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landofhavilahfarm.com\/user\/cimage\/Bottom-of-milk-bucket-lid---web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong>Glass Jar.<\/strong>\u00a0 I bought my gallon sized glass jars through <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uline.com\/Product\/Detail\/S-12758P\/Jars-Jugs\/128-oz-Glass-Jars-with-Plastic-Lid\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\">Uline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\">.\u00a0 Can you believe how cheap they are?!\u00a0 \ud83d\ude00<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong>Fittings.<\/strong>\u00a0 This is harder, I don&#8217;t remember what these items are called.\u00a0 I know they are &#8220;barbed&#8221;, so that the hose fits very snuggly.\u00a0 I took a pic of the &#8220;milk bucket&#8221; lid (see above pics), so hopefully you can take it to a home improvement store (Menards, Lowes, etc)\u00a0or a plumbing supply store and get help to identify them.\u00a0 MAKE SURE they get you FOOD GRADE type material for the parts that come into contact with the milk.\u00a0 The 1\/2&#8243; diameter Milk Hose has to fit over this barbed fitting, so take a piece of Milk Hose with you to test it for correct size.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong>Washers.<\/strong>\u00a0 After your have the &#8220;fittings&#8221; described above, you will need to go find a <strong>metal washer<\/strong> that will fit snuggly over the top of both of\u00a0the &#8220;barbed fittings&#8221;.\u00a0 If you want it to stay pretty (read: not rust &#8211; it doesn&#8217;t really matter if it rusts, it doesn&#8217;t com in contact with the milk), try to find stainless steel.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t locate this at the store I bought the metal washers at, maybe you will have better luck.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 You will also need\u00a0a small package of <strong>&#8220;rubber hose washers&#8221;<\/strong> to place beneath the metal washer, this will help\u00a0prevent leaks &#8211; the jar has to be vacuum sealed as much as possible for this to work.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong>Cutting Tool.<\/strong>\u00a0 My husband had a special &#8220;wood drill bit&#8221; that was 1\/2&#8243; diameter.\u00a0 This worked perfectly to cut holes in the top of the plastic lid.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude00<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong>Assembly.<\/strong>\u00a0 Make sure you MEASURE the lid using the fittings, washers, etc. BEFORE you cut the holes for the fittings to ensure that you have allowed for enough room between them.\u00a0 Remember the old saying: &#8220;Measure twice, cut once&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype'; font-size: large;\">After you have used your &#8220;cutting tool&#8221; to make the 2 holes in the lid.\u00a0 Place the\u00a0metal washer on the bottom portion of the\u00a0barbed fitting, then put on the rubber washer over it.\u00a0 They will be\u00a0ON THE TOP of the lid &#8211; they DO NOT come into contact with the milk.\u00a0 Take\u00a0the barbed fitting, put it\u00a0through the hole going through the TOP of the lid (not from the bottom).\u00a0 Now take the bottom threaded portion of the fitting (the &#8220;female&#8221; part)\u00a0and screw it on the threaded portion of the &#8220;barbed fitting&#8221; (the &#8220;male part&#8221;).\u00a0 Make sure your make them as tight as you can, we need them to be airtight to hold the vacuum.\u00a0\u00a0You should have a fully assembled &#8220;milk bucket lid&#8221;!\u00a0\u00a0Now, take a Sharpy marker and label one of the barbed fittings\u00a0&#8220;#1&#8221; and the other &#8220;#2&#8221;.\u00a0 I\u00a0use #1 for the &#8220;hose that milk travels through&#8221; and #2 for the\u00a0&#8220;hose the vacuum travels through&#8221; (make sure you label the hoses properly as well.)\u00a0 NOTE: Both of these &#8220;hoses&#8221; I&#8217;m talking about in this &#8220;assembly&#8221; section are the 1\/2&#8243; Milk Hose type.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><u><strong>Trap<\/strong>.<\/u><\/span>\u00a0 As Bill at CoPulsation mentioned above, it would be a very good idea to add a trap to ensure that water or milk does not get sucked up into the &#8220;milk machine&#8221; and make it to the pump.\u00a0 So far, it has only gotten into the milk machine portion and has never made it to the pump.\u00a0 When this happens (water\/milk sucked up into the milk machine), I have to break down the PVC portion of the milk machine and clean it out.\u00a0 This is a pain.\u00a0 I want to make a small version of my &#8220;milk bucket&#8221; setup and hook it into the vacuum line that comes off my milk bucket (between the milk bucket and the PVC milk machine) so that it will catch any overflow.\u00a0 That way, it is simple to clean up an accidental overflow.\u00a0 This trap would not have to be removed at every milking, as most of the time it would remain clean and dry (until an accident happens).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">Milk Filter.<\/span><\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>[Since upgrading to the CoPulsation System I stopped using this step. \u00a0I use a funnel filter instead.]<\/em><\/span> \u00a0This came about though an accidental purchase of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jefferspet.com\/product.asp?pn=16671&amp;quick_order=true\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\">2 1\/4&#8243; milk filters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\">, instead of the 4&#8243; type.\u00a0 The 2 1\/4&#8243; ones were too small to fit into my mini filter originally purchased at Caprine Supply.\u00a0 I needed to use them, so I tried placing one on the &#8220;milk inlet&#8221; portion of the &#8220;Milk Bucket&#8221; that I made.\u00a0 IT WORKED!\u00a0 In fact, it worked GREAT!\u00a0 This saves lots of\u00a0time,\u00a0as the milk is filtered as it is being milked.\u00a0\u00a0By the time it hits the milk bucket, it is filtered and ready to be put in the 1\/2 gallon canning\u00a0jar I use to cool and store the milk in the fridge.\u00a0 So glad I prayed and asked God for a way to use those filters!\u00a0 He is AWESOME!\u00a0 He has lots of\u00a0witty inventions, all we have to do is ask!\u00a0 \ud83d\ude00\u00a0\u00a0I have to admit, these filters aren&#8217;t intended to be used in this way (they are intended to be used as\u00a0&#8220;gravity filters&#8221; and not intended to be used under\u00a0vacuum), but it works very well\u00a0&#8211; they hold up and\u00a0I&#8217;ve been VERY\u00a0happy with the milk quality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong><u>The Actual &#8220;Milk Machine.<\/u><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <em>[I still use this part of the milk machine, we use it very successfully with the CoPulsation System. \u00a0Note that the pulsator has been replaced with the CoPulsation pulsator, so I no longer use the pulsator pictured here.]<\/em> <\/span>\u00a0THIS is where I get over my head.\u00a0 There are lots of parts that I don&#8217;t know the names for, I&#8217;m going to have to just provide pics as close up as possible.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype';\"><strong>PVC.<\/strong>\u00a0 You will need a piece of PVC pipe &#8211; not much is needed just enough to fit the &#8220;T&#8221; pieces of PCV together),\u00a04 PVC &#8220;T&#8221; pieces (they appear to be 2&#8243; diameter), some kind of\u00a0&#8220;lid&#8221; for the &#8220;T&#8221; pieces which has a hole in the top of it (it says:\u00a0 2&#8243; 1\/2&#8243; on\u00a0it, it also has\u00a0&#8220;Lasco D2466&#8221; on it)\u00a0and some PVC\u00a0adhesive to glue them all together.\u00a0 Make sure you leave one of the &#8220;T&#8221;
