There is a deficiency of DVM’s\u00a0that are knowledgeable about goats, and sometimes we may be working with the DVM over the phone instead of in person where they can get their hands on the animal to perform a clinical examination. \u00a0I’m on a mission to discover how we, as owners, can perform a clinical examination of our goats to help us help the Vet narrow down what the problem might be. \u00a0I’m hoping that this will help you to give the DVM\u00a0that you are working with more information that will help them to help you and your herd.<\/em> \u00a0 I found this link<\/a><\/em><\/span> that includes some (sometimes gross) pictures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Checklist\/Questionnaire:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Please provide the DVM with the answers to the following questions as best you can, and please answer in ALL CAPS so that they can easily read the information (it can be copied\/pasted into an email) so\u00a0won’t\u00a0miss anything. \u00a0Help for your goat can be better provided if the DVM knows these things beforehand.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Gender<\/strong>. Is your goat a Doe, Buck, or Wether (fixed male)?<\/span>
\n 3a. If a Doe<\/em>, is she bred<\/strong>?<\/span>
\n 3b. If so<\/em>, what is her Due date<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n

4. If doe has recently kidded<\/strong>, when<\/em> and how many<\/em> kids did she have?<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Where are you located<\/strong> (just the state you are in is enough)?<\/span><\/p>\n

6. VERY IMPORTANT:<\/em> Rectal Temperature of goat<\/strong>. \u00a0Normal is between 101 F and 103.5 F depending on the outside temperature,\u00a0<\/span>so please put in the exact temperature of the animal (don\u2019t guess without taking the temp).<\/p>\n

6a. \u00a0What is the outdoor temperature<\/strong> (high and low)?<\/span><\/p>\n

6b. Has the outdoor temperature been fluctuating<\/strong> in the past week?<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Elimination<\/strong>. \u00a0Is the goat having normal bowel and bladder function?<\/span><\/p>\n

8. Intake<\/strong>. \u00a0Is the goat eating and drinking?<\/span><\/p>\n

9. Is the goat ruminating<\/strong>? (Chewing Cud)<\/span><\/p>\n

10. \u00a0Lymph Nodes<\/strong>. \u00a0Are they swollen? \u00a0(Google for lymph node locations on the animal)<\/span><\/p>\n

11. Check the eye membranes & gums<\/strong>, are they reddish\/pink, light pink, or white?<\/span><\/p>\n

12. Check the mouth<\/strong>, is it warm and wet <\/em>or cold and dry<\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n

13. Exactly what feed<\/strong> was the goat in contact with in the last 48 hours before symptoms<\/em> were observed? \u00a0Be specific, include amounts (preferably by weight).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

14. What is the goat’s current diet<\/strong> (what has it been eating today)?
\n<\/span>
\n 15. How long<\/strong> has the goat been ill\/acting “off”?<\/span><\/p>\n

16. Is the goat up and standing\/walking<\/strong> or is the animal DOWN (can’t or won’t get up)<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n

16a. If the goat is DOWN,<\/em> when<\/strong> did it go down?<\/span><\/p>\n
